Beta-Caryophyllene

What is Beta-Caryophyllene?

Beta-Caryophyllene is an aromatic molecule commonly occurring in many plants. Beta-Caryophyllene has been measured in particularly high levels in the essential oils such as basil, rosemary, lavender, and ylang ylang, which we include in our formulations. Thanks to recent research, scientists have reached a deeper understanding of this extraordinary molecule, and how it benefits the human body. Notably, research shows that Beta-Caryophyllene is instrumental in regulating our central and peripheral nervous systems.

Beta-Caryophyllene

Beta-Caryophyllene, like its better known counterpart CBD, takes effect on the body through the Endocannabinoid System, or ECS.

What is the Endocannabinoid System (ECS)?

All mammals have an Endocannabinoid System, whose primary function is to keep the body in perfect harmony, a state called homeostasis. If we imagine our organs as a symphony orchestra, then the ECS is like their conductor - communicating through a vast highway of neurotransmitters found throughout the body, the ECS directs, responds, corrects, manages, and signals to all of the other systems so they can perform in unison.

 Endocannabinoid System
Fun Fact

Our bodies naturally produce two endocannabinoids: anandamide and 2-AG. Beta-Caryophyllene is a phytocannabinoid, which means that it is produced by a plant (‘phyto’).

Together, these compounds operate by clicking into place with two types of receptors found throughout the central and peripheral nervous system - CB1 and CB2. If we imagine these receptors as locks, then Beta-Caryophyllene functions like one of the keys for the CB2 receptor. The body sends these down the neurotransmitter highway to unlock a stream of responses which keep the body functioning in perfect balance - homeostasis!
